Since my write up on the news of WPA (WOLF Performer Arms) will be importing the Taiwanese T91 piston driven AR upper to the US market, there have been a lot of interest in the weapon. Finally, my T&E sample shown up and we went out to the desert try it out.
Bravo Company USA‘s R&D director Eric Kincel. The AR-15 lower that he brought has BCM Intermediate buffer system with a longer A5 length buffer tube and heavier weight buffer. The WPA T91 upper function flawlessly on it. The magazine that he used in the picture is a H&K steel magazine. The other magazines that we tested were the HK416 30-round polymer mag, the 20-round Lancer L5, and 30-round TangoDown ARC mag. No issue with any of those.
The all self-contain gas system of the T91. All the piston part, springs and the gas regulator are contained within the grey color steel tube on the upper right. You don’t have take apart the gas system in a field strip. The whole gas system could remove from the T91 upper as an unit from the front of the pinned gas block.
The two-piece polymer handguard of the T91. Only the lower piece has the aluminum heat-shield. The upper piece has the venting holes and the threaded screw holes at top for mounting accessories. Both halves are locked to the gas-block via a simple captive cross-pin. There are direct drop-in replacement handguards available in Taiwan, those are made from aluminum alloy in either Picatinny 1913 quad-rail or in KeyMod modular interface.
In the Taiwanese military service, this is how the T85 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher mounted on T91. It’s butted against the magazine well at the rear. On the front, it uses the short Picatinny 1913 rail section under the gas block and clamps on to the barrel directly just behind the muzzle device. The leaf sight for the grenade launcher is bolted on to the top handguard directly with the two screw holes.
The standard 1-piece gas block found on the T91 in service with the Taiwanese military. It was developed from the earlier T86 airborne carbine variant. The 2-piece gas block on WPA import version is from the LE version of the T91 that’s in service with the Taiwanese Coast Guard and Police.
The unique T91 collapsible butt stock, pistol grip and checkered castle nut.
The T91 magazine. Noted the two mag-well stops, reinforced mag-catch slot and the number of witness holes for checking the amount of rounds in the magazine.
The rollmark on the T91 lower says “5.56mm T91 Rifle, Made in Republic of China”. The T91 uses a drop-in trigger pack with both the 3-round burst and full-auto capacity. Please noted the T91 in this picture is a special training gun with a trigger solenoid installed.
Th AR-15 lower receiver that I used is build from a San Tan Tactical billet receiver with ambidextrous control, BCM Gunfighter stock and pistol grip, Alexander Arms single-stage trigger, Battle Arms Development stainless BAD selector lever. I added the Weaver Tactical fixed rear sight and the DI Optical RV2 red-dot sight to the WPA T91 upper.
