As one gets older one of life’s lessons become crystal clear. It’s always better to buy quality goods. Not only do well made and well designed products function better, they last longer. And guess what, you the end-user, will be happier.
Take range bags, which might be construed as the Rodney Dangerfield of the gun gear world. They are largely unappreciated and certainly don’t get a lot of respect. They are generally dragged all over creation and over-loaded with heavy, pointy, sometimes toxic or greasy objects. To add insult to injury, they are thrown in and out of vehicles with abandon.
Despite the abuse, they are expected to hold up, until of course, they don’t.
When my last range bag started ripping at the seams I realized it was time to take a walk on the quality side and acquire Brownells Signature Series shooting bag.
The first thing that strikes you about this item is it’s resemblance to a high priced Gucci luggage. The aesthetics on this bag are refined. We’re talking non-scratching, self-healing, nylon YKK zippers (a total of 10 of them) and solid brass pulls. The Velcro secured handle is manufactured from top-grain leather, as well as the straps on the zipper pulls.
This is in fact, a well-designed piece of luggage. In my case its enabled me to transport two handguns, plastic boxes containing hand loads, spare magazines, bore snakes, an AK-sight adjustment tool, Allen wrenches, pliers, ear protection, spent cases, moon clips, eye wear, nano-particle infused (whatever-that-means) lubricant and the plethora of other strange items that every gun owner collects.
Clearly a great deal of thought has gone into this product. Constructed from 1,000-denier Cordura, this bag can handle it all.
The main thing I like is that it’s huge, measuring 25 inches long by 12 inches wide and 12 inches high according to my tape measure. There’s room in there for everything and then some. As Mark Twain might have said, ‘Baby Moses and the Bulrushers’ could fit in there.
Upon closer inspection, it’s actually designed as two bags in one.
There’s an outer bag with large exterior pockets and a main compartment which is accessed by one zipper that creates a kind of flip top. All the zippers are solidly double-stitched in place against heavy nylon backings and there’s the inner, open bag which has adjustable dividers, padded pistol inserts and magazine pouches.
The two padded compartments will accommodate just about any handgun.
The large front bellowed pouch is perfect for ear muffs, shooting glasses and anything else that might be a tad bulky. There two pockets on either end are good for cleaning supplies, tools, etc. The top cover that flips over also has a zipper to you can add targets or any other flat items.
Unlike your typical range bag, this has a bottom secured by 3/8-inch corrugated panels which I need to support my 8-inch barreled Freedom Arms 41 magnum, my 6-inch 10 mm 1911, along with the ammo to feed these beasts.
It also has a padded, detachable shoulder strap made of non-slip, suede leather. After all you’re going to have to carry all this stuff without causing bodily damage!
Of course, it’s backed by Brownells’ lifetime guarantee.
As I was doing research for this article I noticed that one of my heroes, Jerry Miculek carried one of these bags at a recent SHOT Show. As if I needed any more convincing, that sealed the deal. If it’s good enough for Jerry (who’s autograph hangs on my wall) it’s certainly good enough for me.
If your old bag is looking a bit tattered, this will be the last bag you’ll have to buy. Think about it this Christmas…
