Finally an optics mount for Kel-Tec’s SUB-2000 folding carbine!!
Kel-Tec’s SUB-2000 stands out from the pistol carbine crowd for one reason, it folds neatly in half. This allows it to be easily stored inside a messenger bag or pack you would never guess could contain a 16 inch carbine. Due to this reason alone the SUB-2000 has a cult following among those needing to discreetly carry a long gun. Is the SUB-2000 perfect? No, but it fills a particular niche perhaps better than anything else outside the NFA registry.
However, Kel-Tec’s SUB-2000 does have one annoying issue, and that is when you go to mount an optic. Due to the design folding in half, it has been very difficult to find a mounting solution which works well with the SUB-2000. Actually it has been pretty much impossible to find a ‘good’ solution. Or at least it has been up until Troy Storch over at Midwest Industries decided to do something about it. Midwest Industries is known for building a host of accessories for a wide variety of firearms, but he caught me by surprise with his new optic mount.
Midwest Industries new Gen 2 SUB-2000 T1/T2 Optic Mount, as its name implies, fits only the Gen 2 version of the SUB-2000. This is a bit of a bummer to all of us who own Gen 1 guns, but it’s the nature of the beast. The mount attaches to an M-LOK slot on the fore-end. The mount itself is machined from 6061 hardcoat anodized aluminum and weighs just 2.6 ounces. Any Aimpoint T1/T2 or other red dot which fits onto Aimpoint bases can be attached to the mount. The mount is designed to allow the red dot to rotate 360 degrees, and thus move it out of the way when folding/unfolding the carbine. If you look at the above picture you’ll also notice a short section of cord attached to the charging handle. This is included and serves to keep the charging handle locked back when the carbine is folded. Without it, the charging handle could snap forward and bash into the lens of the optic. Makes you wonder how they figured out the need for that!
To use, you simply attach the mount to the fourth M-LOK slot on either side of the fore-end. It doesn’t matter which side you mount it onto. All hardware is included. Then mount your optic and zero it normally. To fold your SUB-2000 with the optic mounted, lock back the charging handle, loop the cord over the handle to secure it, rotate the optic either way it doesn’t matter and fold. Once folded rotate the optic, either way it doesn’t matter, back into place. You can now store the carbine. To unfold, rotate the optic out of the way and unfold the carbine, then rotate the optic back into place. Slip the cord off the charging handle and load and make ready. That is it.
Introductory price of the mount is just $99.95 and Midwest Industries is currently offering a special combo package for the mount and a Primary Arms Advanced Red Micro Dot sight for just $239.95. If you have a Kel-Tec Gen 2 SUB-2000 this is a must have item.
