It is August 2016, and Zeiss Sport Optics USA has just introduced their new Zeiss Conquest Gavia 85 spotting scope. The Conquest line is the mid-range of Zeiss models, yet many would consider the mid-range Zeiss optics comparable to the high-end models of other brands. With a MSRP of $1999, the Zeiss Conquest Gavia 85 is clearly targeting that market segment. For a German-made spotting scope with all Scott glass and a huge 85mm objective, that’s actually not a bad price point.
The Zeiss Conquest Gavia 85 spotting scope features Zeiss’ HD lens system with the top-of-the-line Zeiss T* high-contrast lens coating. Both the objective and the ocular lens have the Zeiss LotuTec hydrophobic protective lens coating. The Zeiss Conquest Gavia 85’s housing is made from lightweight magnesium alloy and is covered with full-body rubber armor. However, being a mid-range Conquest model, it lacks the small 2nd fine-focusing knob founded on Zeiss’ top-end Victory spotting scopes.
The eye-piece is inter-exchangeable, and the wide-angle eye-piece that comes with it offers 30x-60x variable magnification (although, I would prefer a lower end magnification of 20x), and the field of view is quite good at both ends of the spectrum. Also, most shooters would prefer a model with a straight eye-piece for range works.
On the left is the optional photography adapter, which has three variants available for the 49mm, 52mm and 58mm sizes lens thread. Those thread sizes are common in many compact digital cameras and DSLR kit lens. On the right is the Zeiss Astro adapter, which allow the mounting of a 1.25″ astronomy eye-piece for the stargazers.
Digiscoping with a custom camera adapter with the new Zeiss Conquest Gavia 85:
For those of us that prefer to use a smart phone for digiscoping or recording HD video, Zeiss offers their ExoLens bracket adapters for the popular Apple iPhone 6/6S and the Samsung S6 and S6 Edge smart phones.
