GPO USA is a new optic company that launched just before SHOT Show 2017. Now, a new company at SHOT is nothing new, however, GPO is founded by the former president of Zeiss Sport Optics USA and the former CEO of Zeiss Sport Optics Germany. GPO will be offering full range optics from rifle scopes to binoculars with a focus in the mid to high-end part of the market segment. The high-end models will be feature German Schott glass lens and assembled by a Japanese OEM.
Unlike many of the Euro brands, GPO will be embrace the tactical market from the start. During SHOT Show 2017, I had a chance to handle their top-end GPOTac 1-8x24i tactical model. It has a true 1x, daylight visible illumination, MILS-MILS adjustment and first focal plane horse-shoe reticle. There’s also a non-tactical 2nd focal-plane Passion 8X model that has an illuminated modified German #4 reticle with few ballistic hold-over hashmarks.
The GPOTac 1-8x24i features lockable turrets and I like the zoom ring at the back with a relatively short-throw from 1x to 8x. While it uses a bigger 34mm tube size like many of the 1-8x out on the market, the GPO is lighter than most and weights in just 19 ounces. At just 10.7 inch long, the GPOTac 1-8x24i is fairly compact for a 1-8x.
The horse shoe reticle featured in the GPOTac 1-8x24i model. The hashmarks on the subtension lines are in MILS. The center-dot and horse shoe are illuminated daylight bright with fiber optic technology. Typical of a first focal-plane reticle, at 1x the horse shoe zooms out into a bright red dot for fast targeting at close range.
The digital illumination system is powered by a single CR2032 lithium battery. The illumination dial has a “off” setting between each level and the system has a battery saving mode that turns itself off after 3-hours of inactivity. It will also warns the user when the battery drops to 15%.
The FOV at 8x is actually wider than many 1-6x scope. The GPO 1-8x features an interesting double HD objective lens design, and as you can see, there is more than half inch of sunshade build-in at the front of the optic. Both GPO 1-8x models will be available on 2nd quarter of 2017. The GPOTac 1-8x24i FFP tactical model will be retail for $1799. The Passion 8X 1-8x24i SFP hunting/cross-over model has a MSRP of $1499.
