Having just acquired a Glock 19 as a carry piece thru the recommendation of Dave Fortier, I went on the prowl for a holster. I knew I was going to attend the Big 3 Media event near Daytona, and it is always full up with people that have tried every type of holster out there so I was going to try to learn something. As normal everybody was sure their carry option is the best and plastic seemed to be popular, mind you I wont turn my nose up at Kydex but I would much rather have something that wasn’t cookie cutter.
During the presentations a very pretty blonde pretty much had everyone’s attention. Then when she started hauling out leather the already warm Florida day heated up. I know it certainly had my attention if it isn’t titanium it had better be leather! From where I was sitting the product looked great and they worked in exotic leather to boot. Okay now I knew I wanted one since she said they did bison. I had just finished a sheath for my custom made Damascus blade by my friend John Thompson and knew it would be a nice match.
After the presentations were over, I and all the other media people moved out to meet and greet with the industry reps. When I walked through the presentation area I found the MTR Custom Leather table and got a hands on of their incredible work. After talking to the owner Stephanie Rector, the pretty blond that put on the demonstration, I decided then that I was going to buy one of their holsters. I knew I wanted a dual carry holster for my Glock 19 in bison. Normally they don’t do the whole face bison as it is thicker but for some strange reason they agreed to do one for me.
Since Murphy decided we didn’t really need to spend the whole time in Florida he changed the path of a hurricane that was coming up along the coast. When it changed to a path towards where our event was going down it was decided that for the sake of safety to call it short and let people get out before the place got shut down for the ride. A few days later after I got home I found them on Facebook and friended them. I spent a few days looking through their products on their website and knew I wanted the bison dual holster. So having made up my mind I got in contact with Stephanie and ordered a holster. Knowing that they are a custom leather manufacturer, I knew it would take a few weeks to get the holster and I was pretty close to it being right.
A few short weeks later I got home from the drudgery that is a real job, to find a box awaiting me on my front step. Opening it I found my new custom holster and was floored by how good it looked. The stitching was tight and neat, the leather well boned and fitted to the pistol. The bison was beautifully colored and sealed. The clips for in the pants wear were well made and fitted nicely. The leather backing is tough full grain bull hide. I know a lot of people that make and do things but MTR is rather high on the list, with their workmanship and high quality materials. Slipping my Glock in to the new holster it slid home into the boned leather with a pop that was quite unexpected. Turning it upside down and giving it a brisk shake I was doubly surprised that it held in place. I’ve never had a leather holster that held a pistol that firmly without a strap, yet it clears clean and easy with a bit of a pull. It is nice to know if I ended hanging upside my pistol would stay put and not have the look of plastic.
Wearing this dual carry holster either inside the pants or on the outside is a pure joy it fits great and conceals even better with minimal digging and no nasty edges. Carrying is always a pain but MTR made it comfortable. Now I am saving my meager salary to get a matching belt and mag carrier. If you want a holster I would take a good long look at MTR Custom Leather. The exotic leathers available as of now are Elephant, Shark, Tiger Shark, Bison, and horse.
