From the Canadian importer Tactical Imports Corporation:
We are happy to announce that the Type 81 inspection was a success! Inspection notes are as follows:
-30 guns were inspected from random boxes
-No aesthetic problems identified
-450 rounds tested, no stoppages
-No overdrilling of gas ports in barrels
-Mistake with wood finish made, guns will come with an extra set of wood included in the box, finished to proper order specs. Will not effect schedule
-Extra units ordered by Poly on this run, we will have more units available in the future
-Production adhered to the Canadian semi-auto standards as designed, no deviation
-Export already booked, delivery is on schedule
-Guns look sweet!
Attached are some photos of the final product. Properly finished wood was not handy at the time for the fixed stock, just the folding stock model. Quadrail pic attached as well. We will be posting this on forums and email later throughout the week
The targeted retail price will be $999 Canadian dollar or $794 in US dollar. The ETA is 6-8 weeks. The side-folder version will be the first to land in Canada with the wooden stock version coming shortly after. For my follow Americans, NO, you can’t get it due to US import ban and please don’t hassle the Canadian importers.
Optional quad-rail handguard for the Type 81. While the Chinese Type 81’s layout is heavily based on that of the Kalashikov’s but the Chinese has simplified a lot of the areas. Such as how the handguard is mounted. Its top handguard is held in place by the rear sight range dial and the bottom handguard is secured via a large screw on to the bottom of the receiver. This Type 81 qual-rail handguard seems to use the top handguard mounting method for the top halve and the lower piece is then slide in it and locked in by the two screws in the front.
Here’s one of the super rare Type 81 rifle in the US. Only a dozen or so were imported as dealer’s sample before all Chinese center-fire firearms were banned from importation.
The two big differences between this US imported model and the Canadian imported version are the barrel and the trigger mechanism. The barrel on US imported version is completely lacks any rifle grenade rings at the front portion of the barrel. Also the US imported model here has a SKS style safety lever that’s inside of the trigger guard and behind the trigger, the Canadian imported model has the stock M-16 style thumb selector above the pistol grip like the military version.
For a detail look of the Type 81, I have wrote an article on the even rarer Type 81 in the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber for the upcoming issue of the Book of the AK47 special all-AK and Eastern Bloc small arms annual issue by Firearms News. That special issue will be release at the 3rd weeks of August 2017 and it will be available at your local Walmart and other retailer, or by mail order online at the Outdoor Sportman Group webstore here.
