Larry Vickers had the chance to shoot the Norinco CF-98 pistol for his show. Due to the Chinese import ban, this is a rare pistol in the USA. I think it’s probably from a government agency’s collection. The CF-98 is the commercial version of the QSZ-92 service pistol in use by the Chinese, Bangladeshi and Pakistani military. The “CF” in its name is short for Chang Feng Machine Company, its manufacturer.
I wrote an article about this a long time ago. The CF-98/QSZ-92 pistol features a rotating barrel lock action with a very strong 8-lugs locking mechanism that could withstand high velocity submachine gun ammo. My source is the Pakistani Army. They use dedicated MP5 ammo in it. Btw, a small number of the QSZ-92 were made in 7.62x25mm Tokarev caliber for a foreign customer.
A CF98 pistol from a Pakistani gun owner. The “Shameen” falcon mark on the slide is added by the Pakistani importer. I was told there’s also a similar NP42 model available. The “NP” stands for “Norinco Pistol”. The NP42 model has a more common picatinny rail section under muzzle and it lacks the star cast mark in the grip. Some of the Pakistani gun owners believe that NP42 is build to a high spec.
The CF-98/NP42/QSZ-92 has a detachable metal subframe design almost 25 years before the Sig P320. As show in the picture, the polymer frame could be easily replaced. Also, they do make single-feed magazine for it that will work in the newer production model.
Apparently, due to its popularity in Pakistan, there’s a local knock-off clone of it. This Paki-made Khyber Pass special doesn’t even has serial number on the frame.
The barrel of the CF-98/QSZ-92. There’s the larger single cam-track lug by the chamber end that rotates the barrel to lock and unlock the breech. In front of that, there are two offset groups of 8 small locking lugs. Those locks to the two recessed cuts on either side of the slide. On the 5.8x21mm caliber QSZ-92 variant, there no locking lug at all but the barrel still rotates after firing. That’s because the small caliber model is in fact works on a delayed blowback action that uses the rotation of the barrel to slowing down the slide.
You can buy a CF-98 pistol in Canada for $311 USD ($389.99 Canadian Dollar). It’s under $300 USD in Pakistan.
