Samson is a manufacturer of firearms accessories and components that’s better known for their modular slim handguards for AR15/AR10 and their RAM QD mount. Surprisingly, few years ago Samson made a small entry into the gun optic market with their 3.5x magnifier. Overall, I found the Samson 3.5X magnifier to be a good performer optically and it’s priced very reasonably for what it offers.
The Samson 3.5x magnifier by itself. Different than other magnifiers on the market, the Samson has a larger 35mm objective and it provides an extra 0.5x magnification. The lens and roof prism in the Samson magnifier are made from Japanese optical glass and phase-coated for neutral color rendition. During my field test, the Samson shows no chromatic aberration, aka color fringing, even in complex lighting conditions.
The Samson 3.5X magnifier is covered in full-body rubber armor and completely sealed from the environment. This view also shows the two recessed image centering adjustment screws outside of where the main optic is located, and the diopter adjustment ring on the ocular piece.
My optical resolution testing setup. That’s a modified ZTP (Zeiss Test Pattern) chart at 20 yards away and the ZTP is illuminated by two daylight calibrated board-casting quality LED spotlights. The Samson 3.5x magnifier was proven to be a good performer. It has no problem matching the 2nd placed EOTech G33 (pictured) in resolution and contrast, and it was just a bit behind the top performer, the much more expensive Aimpoint 3X Mag magnifier.
The Samson 3.5x Magnifier comes equipped with Samson’s flip-to-side RAM (Rotary Action Mount) QD base. I like the direct mounting of the optic to the base and it’s reversely mountable for left-hand users. Just remove the magnifier by take out the two large mounting screws on the bottom and flip the optic around.
The only thing that I don’t like is that the Samson magnifier is setup for absolute or center co-witness. It works fine with the pictured EOTech XPS holographic sight. For those that prefers the higher lower 1/3 co-witness, an optional 7mm riser kit is needed to purchase from Samson.
I have tested the Samson 3.5x magnifier with my Aimpoint, EOTech, Meprolight and Trijicon red-dot and reflex sights, and it works fine on all of them. Its 6.5 degree field-of-view (FOV) is marginally tighter than the usual 7-8 depress FOV of the typical 3x magnifiers, however, that’s probably a trade-off by including the additional 0.5x magnification.
